While the steelhead season runs year-round, it peaks in fall and winter (September-June). Fly and spin fishing are popular methods for catching steelhead, but you can find success with a rod and reel too.
Salmon
Along with the steelhead, the other popular species you’ll find in abundance in the Trinity River is salmon. Chinook, kokanee, and coho salmon can be found throughout most of the stretch of the river from June through August and again from September to November.
Trinity River Chinook are often trophy-sized, ranging from 8-15 pounds, and are usually best caught via bank or drift boat fishing. For fly fishing, the small leaping coho will be the most fun. While the delicious kokanee, which in recent years has averaged 12-14 inches in this body of water, will bite readily on spoon lures.
Bass
Although the Trinity River is more well-known for its steelhead and salmon populations, it also offers abundant opportunities for anglers looking for largemouth and smallmouth bass. The best spot to head for bass is Trinity Lake, one of the few lakes in California that is home to trophy-sized smallmouths. Smallmouths that range from 3-5 pounds are common here, with the record size for this location actually being a little over 9 pounds.
Both types of bass can be found anywhere in the lake, but the upper end is typically considered the best area. Late winter through spring (March-June) is Trinity Lake’s peak bass season.
